The average age is 7-10 years for the regular cuvees, about 70 years for the grand cuvees, and the ancient rare cuvees date back to soleras from 1890. It is redundant to keep repeating the same tasting notes, so readers will have to take my word for it. this is one of the world's most remarkable dessert wines, and is worth every effort to latch on to a half bottle or so. - Wine Advocate

Red Wine by d'Arenberg from McLaren Vale, Australia. Some years ago, chief winemaker, Chester Osborn, sought out additional premium Grenache fruit from McLaren Vale to meet the high demand for d'Arenberg's Grenache-based wines. Amongst others, a particular vineyard planted thirty years ago with Grenache appeared promising, and was the inspiration in the naming of this wine. Last used for grape production two decades ago, the vineyard fell into neglect and was utilized as a horse paddock. Horses had trampled on the vines making them unproductive. Vine pruning occurred sporadically when the horses snacked on them. Long bracken ferns and native grasses up to a meter high entwined with, and hid the vines. The vines themselves resembled Medusa's hair - wild, thick, struggling and gnarled. Taming and rejuvenation of the vineyard occurred over several years with weeding, reposting, trellising and pruning undertaken. The exceptionally low yielding Grenache was hand-picked late in vintage. The palate starts with a huge Wam! of flavor. Thick, ripe mulberries, blackberries and blueberries progress into a rich, gutsy, licorice and bitumen palate, followed by masses of powerful, youthful, gritty fruit tannins, layered with tones of flowery, cranberry and dark fruit flavors, and a youthful acidity. This is a wine of intense concentration. With time, the tannins will somewhat soften and integrate as the fruit flavors open. Enjoy with grilled chicken or lamb. Drink now or cellar for 5-7 years.
White Wine by d'Arenberg from South Australia, Australia. Since 1912 the Osborn family has tended the 19th century vineyards at their d'Arenberg winery, located in South Australia, where the family often procures top quality fruit from the cool climate Adelaide Hills region, which has become one of Australia's finest Chardonnay districts. During the summer months, native Bearded Dragon Lizards sun themselves on the vineyard posts and watch out for potential prey. Occasionally during harvest, these lizards are dislodged and find their way into a load of grapes headed for the winery. Lucky for these lizards, d'Arenberg uses a very gentle Demoisy crusher, which allows these lizards to pass through the ordeal slightly shaken, yet unharmed. The gentleness of the crusher also plays an important role in retaining the delicate fruit flavors. After excellent winter rains and then a warm wet spring, the vineyards were set for a good start to vintage. Flowering was consistent, and in general crop loads were higher than normal. McLaren Vale experienced the coldest January for 12 years followed by a warm February which provided perfect ripening conditions and the result was fruit of outstanding character, concentration and excellent natural acidity. The success of this wine is put down to the evenness of the ripening period leading up to picking in the early autumn and extremely protective handling in the winery to preserve the wonderful fruit characters. The nose is immediately inviting with volumes of pear, pineapple, tropical fruits, guava, hints of peach, green melon, citrus and very fine sweet toasted oaks. Medium to full in style with the level of ripeness in perfect balance with the elevated acidity and the characteristic cool climate flowery Granny Smith apples that linger to the end with fine oak spices, and citric passionfruit character. Probably the best Lucky Lizard yet.
Red Wine by d'Arenberg from McLaren Vale, Australia. d'Arenberg's vineyards are bordered by Seaview Road to the North, Chalk Hill Road to the South, Coppermine Road to the East and Twentyeight Road to the West. Some locals claim Twentyeight Road is so named originally being 28 chains in length. Others claim it was because it runs to the original 128th linear map division of the district. Alongside this somewhat crooked dirt track is d'Arenberg's Mourvedre Vineyard. Deep bright crimson ruby in color with lifted, spicy clove, cranberry and ripening blackberry primary fruit smells, elements of mulberry, light blackcurrant, cinnamon and vanilla licorice, as well as mint and flowers, especially violets are evident on the young palate. Its medium to full flavored fruit weight dominating softer, rounded vanilla mocha oak flavors, before a long fine acid and slightly sour cherry tannin like finish. After some bottle age The Twentyeight Road Mourvedre should soften in color to more cedary, brick red hues and the nose develop more tobacco, coffee and spicy black olive smells whilst retaining underlying cranberry and floral scents as well as hints of pine needle and tar which can also be found in the mouth. The palate should also develop and integrate with soft prune, cranberry, velvety earthly chocolate flavors and a vibrant fresh acid and fine grained tannin finish for quite some considerable time.
Red Wine by d'Arenberg from McLaren Vale, Australia. Vivid dark purple in color. The viognier adds fragrance and the perfume of flowers, nectarines, ginger and herbs, serving to enhance the very ripe spectrum of the shiraz - blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry. These same characters are also evident on the palate and prevail with a smooth glycerol impact, following through to the mid palate with fruity tannin. The structure has an accent on fine structure and gritty long fruit tannin. After time in bottle the d'Arenberg's Laughing Magpie's flavors should intensify. The restrained tannin and acidity will produce a seamless velvety rolling length with age.

The Stump Jump is at its best while young and will continue to remain fresh for the next three years. It is perfect drinking on a warm summer day, and a perfect match for a wide variety of light dishes.

With Meshach I am seeking the epitome of the Barossa shiraz style - a big, powerful, intensely rich and robust dry red with the potential to age for 20-25 years and develop enormous complexity. I regard this as the most complete Meshach I have yet released. It shows great length and huge intensity on the mid-palate, with a dry finish but not any sign at all of harshness. Made from vines in Burge's Filsell Vineyard that are nearly 100 years old, this is one of Barossa's gems. In this warm vintage it's ripe and gooey, dense with delicious cherry pie, blackberry and licorice flavors that persist through a long, glorious finish. Red Wine by Henschke from Barossa Valley, Australia. In 1912, Ronald Angas planted the sandy loam slopes of Mount Edelstone with Shiraz. Located high in the Eden Valley region this vineyard came to be known as Mount Edelstone meaning gemstone. The 90-year-old ungrafted dry-grown vines from this historic single vineyard are low yielding, producing a depth of color, concentration of flavor, length and maturity of tannins unique to old-vine Shiraz. Mount Edelstone has achieved a formidable reputation since its first vintage in 1952. Deep crimson in color. Sweet ripe plum, anise and blueberry aromas with earthy/dusty hints, gentle ferny characters, spicy cedary oak and eucalypt. Sweet, juicy and ripe on the palate with a fleshy texture, good structure and depth, firm ripe tannins and a long rich finish.

Cyril Henschke developed the Henschke reputation for premium riesling wines as early as the 1950s, from the vineyard areas of Eden Valley, Keyneton and Springton. Green gold in color. Sweet and floral with nectarine, white currant, citrus blossom and lime zest, complexed with hints of gooseberry and white peach. The palate is rich, minerally, crisp and zesty with a good structure, depth and length. Cellaring potential: Exceptional vintage, drink now to 2015. Ros? by Jansz from Australia. The Jansz Premium NV Rose is based upon Jansz wines of several vintages. Specially selected and crafted individual batches from cool climate locations in Tasmania, form this wine. Every site used to source grapes is specifically designated to growing fruit for sparkling wine. All batches are kept separate during winemaking to maximise blending options and the complexity of the final wines. The wine then goes through secondary fermentation in bottles and is aged on yeast lees for as long as possible with the average age of the final blend being 18 months to two years.

Situated on the eastern ranges of the township of Clare, it is one of the highest vineyards in the Valley at an altitude of 480 metres, and is ideal for producing steely, minerally Rieslings, distinctive to the area. Estate Grown: 100% The Lodge Hill Riesling 2004 displays floral and lime citrus aromas. The palate is dry and mineral, with floral/citrus flavours and a long, zesty finish. A wine to be enjoyed now or after it has aged gracefully. Ideal to consume with chicken and seafood dishes.

Red Wine by Kilikanoon from Barossa Valley, Australia. The 2004 Shiraz R Reserve comes from the Greenock's Crowhurst Vineyard as well as a small parcel in Vinevale. Aged 27 months in 100% new French 300 liter hogsheads, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it is an opaque purple-hued, backward, but super-concentrated, full-bodied effort with enormous potential. I would not be surprised to see it age like a Hermitage from France's Rhone Valley. Give it 5-6 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 20-25 years. -Wine Advocate

Drink this powerful Shiraz through 2025. Kilikanoon's winemaker is the talented Kevin Mitchell. Red Wine by Leeuwin Estate from Margaret River, Australia. The color is vibrant plum with velvet purple edges. The aromas are immediately apparent with a very positive raspberry and currant note showing, surrounded by a striking lift of 'noble' smoke, which in itself shows only from great years and great vineyards. The palate is fruity with length and fine texture. Though the overall effect is a flavorful finesse, there is a great impact of dried fruits and currants on the finish. Positive tannin structure carries it through for the long haul.

The complex nose is typical Leeuwin, with lifted aromas of dried pear and ripe peach accompanied by hints of cashews and integrated French oak. Intense flavors of dried pears and citrus are evident on the palate, with richness from regular lees stirring during maturation. New French oak is in perfect harmony with the powerful fruit, adding complexity and structure wihtout overpowering the delicate subtleties. It has silky, smooth tannins resulting from utilizing age-old cap management techniques. The wine shows some cedary, cigar box oak influence along with its bold fruit expression. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2005 Cabernet receives a similar wood treatment to the Merlot, resulting in a big, thick, juicy, fresh, classic South Australian red offering bold, exuberant, blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with striking vanillin and pain grille characteristics. The 2005 Marquis Philips Sarah's Blend is predominantly Shiraz with significant portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc. 100% barrel fermented in new and 1 year old oak (10% French, 90% American oak.) and barrel matured for 12 months. The 2005 wines show generous and concentrated fruit and this vintage of Sarah's Blend is a great example with its flavors of blackcurrant fruit married with opulent toasty oak. It has silky, smooth tannins and shows some lifted and spicy fresh fruit aromas along with its bold fruit expression. One of my favorite Marquis Philips cuvees is the 2005 Sarah's Blend, a concoction of 60% Shiraz, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc fermented in wood and aged in both new and one-year-old French and American oak. First made in 1962, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend that shows very clear, ripe fruit definition when young, with plenty of concentration and fruit sweetness, and minimal oak influence. The 2003 Bin 28 is true to its fleshy, well structured style with ripe tannins and balanced acidity.

Post fermentation characters of butterscotch and freshly baked bread combine with the fruit aromas to produce a wine with subtlety and complexity.
