Louis XIV became known as the Sun King for his benevolence and his patronage of the Arts, which became the foundation of France's rich artistic heritage. At the Palace of Versailles Louis XIV was the first French King to drink Champagne. Louis XIV's era became known as the Grand Siecle - the Great Century. Bottled in a replica of a 17th Century bottle evoking the radiance of that period, Laurent-Perrier's prestige cuvees embody luxury, magnificence and elegance fit for a king. When it came to his prestige cuvee, Bernard de Nonancourt decided to highlight two of Champagne's traditional realms of proficiency: the blending of different crus and different vintages. Grand Siecle is the epitome of Champagne cuvees, as it blends complementary wines from Laurent-Perrier's very best growths and most successful vintage years. Grand Siecle is made with a pinot noir and chardonnay blend, with the latter being slightly dominant. Red Wine by Nicolas Potel from Burgundy, France - regions. Nicolas Potel is one of a new breed of vinificateurs who are redefining the meaning of negociant in Burgundy. With his father, the highly respected Gerard Potel, who was manager of a well-known domaine in Volnay, he began a negoce house in July 1996. Upon his father's sudden death in October 1997, Nicolas left the domaine and took over the negoce business full time. In January 1998, Nicolas began to purchase fruit and post-fermentation lots of wine from prestigious domaines. His own relationships with growers and the legacy of his father helped open doors to some of the greatest domaines, even those who normally sell little or nothing except under their own label. As early as 2000, Clive Coates MW was writing that Nicolas was already a super-star. Medium red-ruby. Tangy raspberry, mocha, coffee and minerals on the nose; needs a racking. Sweet, pure flavors of raspberry and minerality. This has more volume than the Clos-Saint-Denis but also seems quite reserved. -International Wine Cellar 91-93

Offers a penetrating, sappy kirsch flavor on the palate, in a rather dense, powerful style. This is powerful without coming across as heavy. A strongly reduced nose gives up little but the well-muscled flavors are big, robust and very powerful and possess the class young Clos de Vougeot youthful austerity. This is very primary and awkward yet the quality of the raw material is clear and this should reward 10 to 15 years of cellar time. 91-94 points Burghound
White Wine by Pascal Jolivet from Loire, France. Fresh, grassy aromas. Ripe and lush for Sauvignon Blanc as a result of the atypically hot 2003 vintage, but well balanced and quite delicious. Reasonably soft in the mouth, but still endowed with a nice long finish.

Non-Vintage by Piper-Heidsieck from Champagne, France - regions. The majority of the blend of Piper-Heidsieck signature Cuvee Brut is composed of Pinot Noir. Hand selected parcels of Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay also play important roles in the elaboration of this well-balanced cuvee. Selected reserve wines from preceding years are incorporated into the blend to ensure consistency of style year after year. The blend is aged for minimum 24 months on the lees before release.

The Cuvee is consistently made in the style he preferred: robust, full-bodied, relatively mature and dominated by Pinot Noir which contributes firmness and backbone complemented by the ethereal elegance of Chardonnay. The Cuvee is composed of the only the finest grapes from the very best vineyards (and only those from within the Champagne area under vine in Sir Winstons day), chosen for declaration in only the best vintage years. Bright gold with a lively mousse Deep, pungent nose features powerful scents of minerals, saffron, pear, lilac, buttered apple, pear, white peach and marzipan. Broad and improbably concentrated, the pear and apple flavors packing a huge punch and complicated by buttery, leesy tones. As rich and supple as this is, it also boasts brilliant cut. Finishes with expansive, exotic spice and pear notes, and superb focus and length. This spent nine years on its lees. Already delicious but I'd opt for holding this one for another decade before popping the cork. -IWC

Pol Roger owns 200 acres of vineyards, which provide about 45% of their needs. Pol Roger's cellars extend over four miles of winding chalk passageways on two levels. The second or deeper cellar maintains a constant 9.5 C (50 F), one degree lower than the first level and most others in the region. This lower temperature slows the second fermentation, encouraging a finer mousse or bubbles. Pol Roger Champagne also spends two to three times the allowable minimum in the cellar before disgorgement, or about three years for the non-vintage and up to seven for the luxury cuvees. The long, slow maturation contributes greatly to the complex aromas, which distinguish these superb Champagnes. The Vintage Brut follows the traditional formula for Pol Roger Vintage, being composed of about 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay drawn from 18 Grands and Premiers Crus. As always, the Pinot Noir contributes the intensity, backbone, tannins and body while the Chardonnay provides the fragrance, elegance, finesse essential to a perfect balance. Vintage Brut is only produced in declared vintage years.
