Created by Jose Maria da Fonseca in 1850, Periquita is made primarily from the Castelao Frances grape, an indigenous variety that thrives in southern Portugal and, originally ushered into the public eye by Fonseca, has become nearly synonymous with the highly regarded wines of this historic producer. The wines has a dark ruby color with amber tints. The bouquet is of wild blueberries, vanilla, dried figs, oak and spices. In the mouth it is full-bodied, velvety smooth and well balanced, with soft tannins and a glossy finish. Periquita Classico is made only in vintages of exceptional quality.
