Red Wine by Porcupine Ridge from South Africa. Blend: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec The wine has a deep crimson color; cassis and cedar flavors dominate the nose and follow through to the palate. This wine is complex with a medium to full palate and while enjoyable young, further cellaring will reward the drinker.
Red Wine by Rustenberg from South Africa. 46% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot A great vintage following the excellent 2003. There is more restraint in this vintage and the wine is very complex all around. Typical Rustenberg aromas of cellar spices, dark cherries & fynbos. The palate is richly layered with fruit tannin and well-balanced. John X. Merriman purchased part of the Rustenberg farm in 1892 (it was subsequently bought by the current owners, the Barlow family, in 1940) and this Cabernet-dominated blend is named after him. As with all Rustenberg wines, this is a fine, structured bottling that's more than New World. Offers smoky fruit, a mineral character, and dry tannins. White Wine by Simonsig from South Africa. Pale straw color with hints of green. Fresh tropical fruit on the nose. Delicious concentration of riper sauvignon fruit fill the palate showing green figs, kiwi fruit and gooseberries. Zesty and refreshingly crisp in its youth which should develop into a silky roundness over time. A warm, dry vintage wih welcome rain in October and around New Year replenished moisture in the soil and prevented moisture stress. The sauvignon harvest started 2 weeks earlier than normal in the last week of January and was finished on February 9. The early picking retained more fruit intensity. The wine is made in a reductive style by protecting the juice against oxidation from the vineyard all the way into the bottle. The wine takes time to open up and normally reaches its peak 8 to 10 months after vintage. This is substantiated by the Wine Spectator rating the 2004 Sauvignon Blanc 89 points a full year after vintage.
Red Wine by Vilafonte from South Africa. Series M. This wine is more Merlot based; still a blend, but using the Merlot, and Malbec with Cabernet to give it some backbone. It is more supple, more fruit forward; with silky texture in the mouth, good length, and very approachable and succulent. Merlot 41% Malbec 16% Cabernet Sauvignon 39% Cabernet Franc 4%
Red Wine by Warwick Estate from South Africa. 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 32% Pinotage: Each component of this Cape blend offers its own qualities. This vintage shows an explosion of fruit on the nose which is largely attributable to the Pinotage component. The Pinotage is soft and sweet while the Merlot offers a subtle spiciness. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone of the blend. Ripe tannins with an innate softness that will mature with cellaring. Full on the palate with a sweetness on the finish. This blend brings the best of Pinotage to the classic French varieties.
